Homework
Compose your own scale or melody
1. Surf the internet for a list of numbers (you could start with our link to Related Sites).
Look for numbers of interest.
2. Copy and paste the numbers into the Import Algorithm accessed from the Compose button at
http://musicalgorithms.ewu.edu/ or http://musicalgorithms.ewu.edu/algorithms/import.html.
3. Think about the effects the numbers may have when scaled via modulo or division.
4. Try a few settings for scaling the numbers into pitches and durations
5. Write down the settings you like and share the results with the class
Notes:
► Students should consider the scaling operations carefully in relation to the numbers they
have found. For example, 40 Fibonacci numbers with the division operation in a range of
0-88 sound quite repetitive and dull.
► The teacher can demonstrate this assignment. Access interesting sites from the “learn more”
link in “Import Algorithm” http://musicalgorithms.ewu.edu/algorithms/import.html. Click on
“learn more” under 1 Algorithm in red. A pop-up window will display several links.
