October, 2010
Dear Eagle Family,
Enjoy some quick thoughts from what transpired in September and what is in store for us in October…
A Look Back…September
• What a special start to a new era at Eastern Washington University – Roos Field! From the rededication on September 16 with our special guests, Dave and Gay Woodward, to the magical victory over Montana two days later – tremendous.
• Some other notes regarding the first note – the most fans ever to witness an Eastern game in Cheney (11,702) – the most Eastern students ever to witness a game (over 3,000), ESPN Gameday filming a feature for their show the following week in Boise, to SWX producing a 30 minute show on the Red Field – Rolling out the Red Carpet…see link https://swx.grandstadium.tv/Shoppingcart/SelectDVD.aspx
• Congratulations to Allison Reinstein (Volleyball) and J.C. Sherritt (Football) for being named Athletic Department Scholar Athletes of the Month for September. A release on that will be forthcoming next week.
• After a very difficult non-conference schedule, our volleyball team has split their first four games of the Big Sky season (including a home sweep of Weber State and Idaho State)…after some early season injuries, the team appears to be at full strength and the remainder of the year should be very competitive within the Conference.
A look Ahead…October
• Our women’s soccer team is looking to turn things around as the Big Sky season begins (and ends) this month – with the seven conference matches scheduled – our team is looking to replicate their second place performance in 2009.
• Our annual Hall of Fame induction will be on October 9…for more information here is a link provided by sports information …

• Two weeks later (October 23) will be Homecoming with the University’s annual parade on Friday, October 22nd and our football game versus Sacramento State on Saturday.
• Eastern will be hosting the Big Sky cross country championship on Saturday, October 30 at the Fairways Golf Course.
• Please know that audio is now being piped in for our football coaches radio show held at Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Northern Quest Casino (The Q Restaurant) – we appreciate The Q accommodating this request as many of our supporters enjoy listening to Coach Baldwin live and now you can.
Finally –
There continues to be movement within the intercollegiate athletic landscape and with the Western Athletic Conference looking to reconstitute after the impending departures of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada - the Big Sky along with its membership continue to monitor and react (by adding Cal Poly and UC Davis in football only) to this ever fluid situation. Could the Big Sky potentially lose members to the WAC? The simple answer is yes (has happened before and will probably happen again at some point) but do remember it is a potentially much greater decision for an FCS school to move to the FBS level than an existing FBS school to just change conferences.
Until next month…Go Eagles!!
