February, 2010
Dear Eagle Family,
I hope that the first month of the new decade has started well for you. It has been a whirlwind in the athletic department as we closed the book on a very successful fall season and now look to finish strong in the winter season. In addition to our winter sports, our tennis seasons have kicked off as well – all in all, very busy.
Thank You
By now, you know of the unbelievably generous gift that Michael and Katherine Roos have pledged for new synthetic turf at Woodward Field. The twist that has caught the fancy of many is our idea of not only laying a superior synthetic surface but rather a RED superior synthetic surface. As I have been able to mention to a number of folks, this conversation would not even be possible if not for the leadership and benevolence of Michael and Katherine – again thank you to two special people!
Exciting Women’s Basketball
If you have yet to come out and see our first place women’s basketball team in action, I encourage you to do so. Coach Schuller’s team has come of age and is playing very well thus far this season. As always check out www.goaegs.com for the latest in schedule and ticket information.
Kudos in Classroom
52 student-athletes were named to the Big Sky fall all-academic team – in fact, after fall quarter – every one of our 14 athletic programs had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher – pretty impressive!

Our condolences II
I would prefer to not make this a monthly part of the letter as last month we paid tribute to the Maurstad family – and this month I would like to pay tribute to Dan Fitzgerald who passed away unexpectedly in January. Many of you know Dan as the longtime GU basketball coach and general ambassador for Spokane – I came to know Dan in my three years here in Cheney/Spokane as the Director of Community Relations for Northern Quest Casino. Dan was as warm and welcoming as anyone that I have met in the community and that is saying a lot because there are so many wonderful people in the Inland Northwest. Dan’s graciousness will never be forgotten by me and his stamp on this community will not as well…RIP Fitz… Best Wishes and Go Eagles!!!
