April 2011

Dear Eagle Family,

It’s hard to believe the first quarter of 2011 has already gone by, and probably harder to believe that we have already begun spring football. But we have, and April looks to be a very busy month for Eastern Athletics – here are some of the upcoming events:

EAA FUND DRIVE KICKOFF - Will be on April 6 at the Red Lion Inn at the Park in the Skyline Ballroom at 5 p.m….this year we are very confident that we can eclipse the 1000 member mark.  These funds are critical to the success of our department and we look forward to many new members in 2011.

COACHES GOLF TORUNAMENT (April 29) – Held every year the day before the Killin Dinner.  This “season-opening” golf tournament benefits the football team and will be held at the Fairways Golf Course.

RED & WHITE SPRING GAME (April 30) – Will be held on Roos Field at 2 p.m. prior to the Killin Dinner.  This will be a great opportunity to come out and get a glimpse of the defending national champs in a game-day setting.

OTHER KILLIN EVENTS – In addition, both our volleyball and soccer teams will play their “spring game” as well on Saturday, April 30 (volleyball at 11 a.m. and soccer at noon). And on Friday, April 29, the track and field team will host the 40th Annual Pelluer Invitational meet at Roos Field.

KILLIN DINNER, DANCE AND AUCTION (April 30) – Always a tremendous time and this year should not be an exception.  We will continue to celebrate our football national championship at this year’s event along with raising funds for our department.

WELCOME COACH HAYFORD – As many of you know (and were there), we introduced Jim Hayford on March 29 as our 17th head coach in men’s basketball.  Coach Hayford comes to Eastern with tremendous coaching credentials as well as a wealth of community support.  More on his hiring is at:

FOOTBALL EVENTS – Many alums have asked me what types of events the football team, coaches, etc have been a part of since our win in January so let me provide some of that information here:

The 22nd annual Hoopfest poster was unveiled on April 4 and the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world took on a terrific theme as you will see at:

In addition Coach Baldwin will be throwing out the first pitch on Saturday, April 9, at Safeco Field when the M’s take on the Indians.  Let’s wish Coach Baldwin well for a solid high strike when throwing that pitch (nothing worse than one in the dirt in a ceremonial first toss).  More on his appearance is at:

FINALLY – If imitation is the best form of flattery…it would appear that another “non-traditional” colored field will be in play in 2011.  Central Arkansas has announced that they will be installing a multi-colored field…nice to have another member of the “club”… http://www.ucasports.com/news/2011/4/1/FB_0401113911.aspx

Until next month,

Bill
