February 2012
Dear Eagle Family,
One month already down in 2012 – it’s amazing how time flies. January was a very special month for us as our department/university took home two very prestigious honors. First, Bo Levi Mitchell was named the 2011 Walter Payton Award winner – our second such honor in the past seven years. I have said several times at multiple speaking opportunities over the past several weeks that with this great honor, I believe over the past five years that our football program has been arguably the most decorated FCS program in the nation. With three playoff appearances, two Buchanan Award winners (2008 and 2010), one Payton Award and one National Title, Coach Baldwin and his staff have taken a tremendous program and made it elite – congratulations!!
I hope that many of you have had the opportunity to come to Reese Court to watch both our men’s and women’s basketball teams play this year. As we come down the stretch in the Big Sky Conference, it should be fun to watch both teams jockey for playoff position. Coach Schuller’s team (7-2 in league play as of this writing) is threatening to win our second regular season title in three years while Coach Hayford’s team is right in the thick of the playoff hunt. Attendance for men’s games have been at its best since 2003 – in fact, during the Montana weekend games we registered back-to-back 3000+ crowds for the first time since ’03. The women, meanwhile, have been road warriors – 5-0 in conference play away from Cheney – including a sweep of the Montanas in the Treasure State – the first time EVER that an EWU women’s team has accomplished that feat . . . kudos!!
Finally, junior Keisa Monterola has been truly amazing in the pole vault – please see Dustin Toms’ release below . . . Keisa will have an opportunity to perform at the league indoor championships with a very high possibility of representing Eastern at the NCAA Indoor Championships with the outdoor season to follow. When the outdoor season does begin, I would certainly encourage all of you to come see her and all of our other tremendous track and field athletes perform when we host the 41st annual Pelluer Invitational which this year falls on the same weekend as Killin – April 27.
